Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of cattle and swine. Animals pick up the virus either by direct contact with an infected animal or by contact with foodstuffs.
The clinical signs of the disease are fever followed by the appearance of vesicles (fluid-filled blisters) between the toes and on the heels, on mammary glands and especially on the lips, tongue and palate.
